About Made Open
We build community platforms that help strengthen connections, support collaboration and create meaningful social impact. We’re a Certified B-Corp with a mission to build happier, healthier communities through our community technology and human-centred design approaches.
You’ll join a small, friendly, professional team that blends design, tech and strategy - working closely with customers that include local government, the NHS, charities, universities and businesses.
The role
We’re looking for a Digital Designer who can bridge the gap between design and code, bringing designs to life online.
This is a unique opportunity for an early-career digital product designer to take real ownership of our community platform and have a tangible impact from day one. You’ll help shape user experiences and interfaces that are intuitive, inclusive and engaging for a diverse audience.
Working on designs, prototypes and front-end implementation, you’ll collaborate closely with designers, developers and product leads to turn ideas into high-quality user experiences. You’ll receive mentorship on technical architecture while actively contributing to the development of our products.
What you’ll do
While support and guidance will be available, you’ll be expected to hit the ground running with HTML, CSS and JavaScript skills from day one, helping ensure our community platforms are responsive, accessible and easy to use.
Design & research
- Support UX research, usability testing and feedback sessions to understand our diverse user base.
- Create wireframes, interactive prototypes and high-fidelity UI assets.
- Maintain and evolve our design system and visual language to ensure consistency across our products.
- Apply accessibility and inclusive design principles (WCAG 2.2) to everything we build.
Front-end build
- Turn design mock-ups into clean and responsive code using HTML5, CSS and JavaScript.
- Work directly within our Laravel framework to implement UI improvements.
- Work with our developers to ensure seamless implementation of your designs.
- Make incremental UI improvements across our web platform interfaces.
Team participation
- Join design, sprint planning and cross-discipline team meetings.
- Contribute ideas and creative solutions that align with our mission and values.
- Learn from senior designers and developers through mentorship and feedback.
Skills requirements
Essential skills
- Experience with design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe Illustrator or similar.
- Strong HTML and CSS skills for responsive layouts and component based thinking
- Basic JavaScript skills
- UI design skills to present ideas for team discussion
- UX awareness with the ability to identify improvements based on team, user and real-word feedback
Nice to have skills
- Ability to work with PHP templating languages
- Familiarity with the Laravel ecosystem (Blade templates).
- Experience designing for accessibility and diverse user groups.
- A passion for designing tech for good products.
- Familiarity with Git (we use Bitbucket) and comfortable working on shared codebases.
Why work with us
- Join a collaborative and supportive team, where your ideas and contribution is valued.
- Progress your career with this "fast-track" opportunity to grow from a Junior to a Senior designer as our community platform and team expands.
- Flexible / remote working opportunities and culture that values work-life balance.
- Make a difference - every feature you design will help people live and work better.
